Etching is one of my favourite mediums to work with. The technique is centuries old and barely changed over that time. The basic process is to cover a highly polished sheet of metal (copper is my preference) in a thin, acid resistant wax which can then be drawn through with a very fine needle. This “plate” can then be submerged in an acid which can etch the exposed metal. A short “etch” gives a light line, a longer “etch” gives a stronger line. I also use a process called Aquatint (which has nothing to do with water!) to help create areas of tone. I’ll write a more detailed explanation of the process for the website soon!
